Remember the Basics!
by Becky Wyand
Devotion
Let me share with you part of the morning message from November 7, from Charles Spurgeon’s, “Morning and Evening”. The verse he quotes is: “Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.” Is. 49:16, he then shares, “How dare you doubt My constant remembrance, when the memorial is set on My very own flesh?” Later he continues, “He keeps His promise a thousand times, and yet the next trial makes us doubt Him. He never fails. He is never a dry well. He is never as a setting sun, a passing meteor, or a melting vapor, yet we are as continually vexed with anxieties, molested with suspicions, and disturbed with fears, as if our God were the mirage in the desert.”
But, we are graven upon the palms of His hands and we can trust Him!
The Basics
Let’s encourage one another to practice the basics.
Consider:
-
Basic reading skills - If your child is not a fluent reader, continue to review the basics or practice what further testing reveals to be your Child’s learning style.
-
Math - Encourage practical use of numbers increasing the opportunity as the child as the child grows. Review the basics of add and multiply facts until they are mastered.
-
Research - Practice until your child is proficient in finding the best solution or answer and can write up hid findings presentably.
-
Politeness – Continue to train in how to speak to old people, how to protect younger siblings and how to speak kindly to parent. Be satisfied with nothing short of politeness.
-
Servant – Give opportunities to practice the servant’s heart. How does a child get one? What is your goal?
Thinking
Earlier I introduced you to Peter Jones’ “Gospel Truth Pagan Lies that Mrs. Lundin gave me.” This type of reading will help your older student make connections in his thinking that can lead to truth. Also, having been forewarned of the lies out, there your thinking teen should be less likely to believe the lie.
Continue to work with your children to help them understand WHY they believe what they believe. Another resource that I find helpful is Erwin Lutzer’s, “Slandering Jesus”. The subtitle reveals Lutzer’s thesis: “Six lies people tell about the man who said he was God.”
Because of the rapid growth of the contrast of the Muslim religion, his contrast of Muslim and Christianity is helpful. This is a 150 page easy to understand book.
